    About Thucydides

Thucydides (c. 460 – c. 400 BC) was an Athenian general, historian, and political analyst universally celebrated as the 'Father of Scientific History' and a pioneer of political realism. Serving as a military commander in the Peloponnesian War between the Athenian empire and the Spartan alliance, Thucydides contracted and survived the catastrophic Plague of Athens before being exiled following a military defeat in 424 BC. His subsequent exile afforded him the unique opportunity to objectively investigate both combatant sides, culminating in his monumental History of the Peloponnesian War. Rejecting supernatural interventions and mythological explanations in favor of strict empirical evidence, chronological rigor, and eyewitness testimony, Thucydides dissected the brutal geopolitical dynamics of imperial ambition, power politics, and democratic fragility. Famous episodes like Pericles' Funeral Oration and the Melian Dialogue remain foundational texts in international relations, military history, and political philosophy.
