Biography
Apollonius of Rhodes, also known as Apollonius Rhodius (flourished early 3rd century BC), was a Hellenistic Greek epic poet, scholar, and director of the prestigious Library of Alexandria. A pivotal figure in the vibrant intellectual circle of Ptolemaic Alexandria, Apollonius was a student of Callimachus, with whom he famously engaged in a celebrated literary debate over whether epic poetry in the grand Homeric style remained viable in the refined Hellenistic age. His immortal masterpiece, the Argonautica, is the sole surviving Hellenistic epic, recounting the perilous quest of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece from Colchis. Apollonius revitalized classical epic conventions by introducing profound psychological realism, scholarly antiquarian detail, and the first comprehensive portrayal in Western epic of romantic psychological torment through the character of Medea. His innovative masterpiece served as a vital poetic model for Virgil’s Aeneid and classical Roman literature.
