Biography
Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469–1527) was a Florentine diplomat, political philosopher, historian, and playwright celebrated as the founding father of modern political science and political realism. Serving as a senior official and diplomatic envoy for the Florentine Republic for over a decade, Machiavelli observed firsthand the cutthroat statecraft, military conflicts, and strategic maneuvers of Renaissance Italy, interacting directly with leaders like Cesare Borgia, King Louis XII, and Pope Julius II. After the Medici family returned to power in 1512, Machiavelli was stripped of office, imprisoned, and tortured before retiring to his country estate, where he penned his notorious treatise, The Prince (Il Principe). By uncoupling political leadership from traditional Christian ethics and analyzing state power through ruthless empirical pragmatism, Machiavelli analyzed how power is actually won, exercised, and maintained rather than how ideal rulers ought to act. His provocative political insights remain foundational to modern international relations and political theory.
