Biography
Lionel David Barnett (1871–1960) was a distinguished British orientalist, classical philologist, and indologist whose scholarly translations and historical analyses introduced ancient Indian philosophy, religion, and literature to the Western world. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he achieved highest honors in classical tripos, Barnett served for nearly three decades as the Keeper of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum, while also lecturing as Professor of Sanskrit at University College London. An extraordinary polyglot with profound expertise in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali, and Tamil, Barnett authored foundational academic studies including Antiquities of India and Hindu Gods and Heroes. His celebrated translation of the Bhagavad Gita, alongside his critical editions of classical Indian philosophical treatises and dramas, was praised for its philological precision, poetic grace, and deep cultural sensitivity. Barnett’s lifelong dedication to cross-cultural scholarship contributed immensely to modern comparative religion and South Asian studies.
