    Biography

    About H. G. Wells

Herbert George Wells (1866–1946) was an English novelist, historian, journalist, and social visionary widely celebrated alongside Jules Verne as the 'Father of Science Fiction.' Born into working-class poverty in Bromley, Kent, Wells secured scholarships to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley, an experience that instilled in him a lifelong fascination with Darwinian evolution, scientific advancement, and societal progress. In a breathtaking creative period during the late 1890s, Wells authored revolutionary 'scientific romances' that invented or codified enduring speculative tropes: time travel in The Time Machine, biological mutation in The Island of Doctor Moreau, scientific hubris in The Invisible Man, and extraterrestrial invasion in The War of the Worlds. Beyond speculative fiction, Wells was a tireless social commentator, utopian socialist, and champion of universal human rights, authoring influential realistic novels, pedagogical surveys such as The Outline of History, and political tracts that anticipated modern international governance and human rights charters.
