    Biography

    About Frances Hodgson Burnett

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was an Anglo-American novelist and playwright celebrated for creating some of the most enduring, beloved classics in the history of children's literature. Born in Manchester, England, Burnett emigrated with her family to rural Tennessee following the death of her father and the collapse of the local textile industry. Displaying extraordinary entrepreneurial drive and storytelling talent, she supported her impoverished household by publishing popular stories in American women's magazines. She achieved international fame with Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), a sentimental triumph that became a global cultural and fashion phenomenon. Her lasting masterpieces, A Little Princess (1905) and The Secret Garden (1911), showcased her profound understanding of childhood emotional resilience, social dislocation, and psychological renewal through companionship and nature. Characterized by rich atmospheric detail, fairy-tale enchantment, and poignant emotional realism, Burnett’s enduring narratives continue to captivate young readers and adult audiences across the globe.
