    Biography

    About Augustine of Hippo

Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD), also revered as Saint Augustine, was a North African theologian, rhetorician, and Bishop of Hippo Regius whose monumental writings profoundly shaped the course of Western philosophy, psychology, and Christian theology. Born in Tagaste (modern-day Algeria), Augustine embarked on an intense spiritual and intellectual odyssey through Manichaeism and Neo-Platonism before his dramatic conversion to Christianity in Milan under the mentorship of Saint Ambrose. His revolutionary masterpiece, Confessions, pioneered the genre of intimate introspective autobiography, detailing his inner psychological turmoil, youthful transgressions, and relentless quest for divine grace and moral truth. In his monumental twenty-two-book treatise, The City of God, Augustine formulated a profound philosophy of history responding to the Visigothic sack of Rome, contrasting the eternal spiritual commonwealth with transient secular empires. Augustine’s foundational concepts regarding original sin, divine illumination, sovereign grace, and the complex nature of human memory and free will continue to exert monumental influence across theology, philosophy, and Western civilization.
