Biography
Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870), born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie and often designated Alexandre Dumas père, was a prolific and celebrated French novelist, essayist, and playwright whose swashbuckling historical romances remain cornerstones of world literature. Born in Villers-Cotterêts to General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a heroic French general of mixed Afro-Caribbean descent, the younger Dumas overcame racial prejudice to conquer the Paris literary world. He first gained national renown as a dramatist during the Romantic revolution before transforming historical serial fiction with breathless pacing, vivid dialogue, and sweeping melodrama. His enduring masterpieces, including The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Twenty Years After, captured the popular imagination with unforgettable tales of chivalry, political intrigue, vengeance, and enduring loyalty. Translated into nearly one hundred languages and adapted into hundreds of theatrical productions and feature films, Dumas’s exuberant storytelling and cinematic flair established him as one of the most widely read and beloved authors in human history.
